Quality Dental Care in Hixson & Chattanooga, TN

You deserve a smile you feel great about, and at Tennessee River Dental, our mission is to help you get one. Our Hixson dentist, Dr. Ken Randall, works with patients throughout the greater Chattanooga area to create personalized dental treatment plans, and we focus on taking a comprehensive approach to care that creates an ideal smile in the long-term. If you're suffering from an advanced cavity, broken tooth, or need to replace a missing tooth, we offer a variety of treatment options, but dental crowns and bridges are two of the most common.

Dental Crowns

Ideally, we focus on preventive care to stop cavities from forming in the first place – but when that fails, one option to repair a decayed tooth can be with a restorative treatment like a dental crown. Dental crowns are custom-made "caps" that fit over natural teeth. Crowns may be made from several different materials depending on the situation and we custom-shape and color match your crown to blend in perfectly with your natural teeth. Once in place, a dental crown protects the tooth from many types of fractures and provides you with a complete, natural-looking smile.

Dental crowns are a simple procedure that requires one or two routine visits to our office. While every patient is different, the process normally looks like this:

  • First, Dr. Randall will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area for the procedure.
  • Your Chattanooga dentist will then use specialized tools to clean the area, remove any decayed material, and rid the tooth of bacteria.
  • Dr. Randall will then carefully reshape the tooth to accommodate a dental crown. After reshaping the tooth, he'll take an impression of the tooth to use when making your permanent crown.
  • Most of the time, permanent crowns can be made at the same visit as the tooth is reshaped but in some instances a temporary crown is necessary. If a temporary crown was needed, you'll wear this it for about three weeks while we custom-manufacture your permanent crown.
  • Once your permanent crown is finished, we'll bring you back to our office to remove your temporary crown and fit your custom-made permanent crown. After making final adjustments to the shape and position of the crown, we'll set it into place using specialized dental cement.

Once in place, your new crown will blend in perfectly with your teeth. You'll need to care for your crown and keep surrounding teeth and gums healthy to maximize the life of your crown and smile. With proper care and oral hygiene, your new crown should last the rest of your life!

Dental Bridges

Crowns can help to repair teeth that have suffered serious decay, but in some cases, we may need to replace a tooth entirely. Dental bridges help us do that. A dental bridge is an appliance that uses two adjacent crowns to support an artificial tooth, called a pontic, that replaces a missing tooth. Bridges can be used to replace missing teeth, fix bite problems, and protect the health of surrounding teeth, making them an effective treatment for many patients.

Bridges come in three main types, and each is used in specific situations:

  • Fixed Bridge: The most common type of dental bridge, fixed bridges use two crowns on either side of a filler tooth to support the replacement. This is an effective solution for replacing teeth throughout most areas of the mouth.
  • Maryland Bridge: A Maryland bridge uses tooth-colored bands, instead of crowns, to support a replacement tooth. Often, Maryland bridges are used to replace missing front teeth, as they don't require your Hixson dentist to shape surrounding teeth as dramatically.
  • Cantilever Bridge: Finally, a cantilever bridge is similar to a fixed bridge except the two crowns are on the same side with the replacement tooth connected on the end.
