The Importance of Baby Teeth

Your child's primary teeth, more commonly known as baby teeth, will fall out eventually – but that doesn't mean they aren't important. Baby teeth play a critical role in your child's dental development, so taking good care of them is vital to your child's smile. If your child does lose a tooth prematurely, it's important to let us know. We may need to fit them with a space maintainer to ensure their teeth don't lean into the gap left behind, and we may recommend other specific treatments depending on the situation. It's also important to establish good oral hygiene with baby teeth, as this is when children learn habits that will last a lifetime.

Infant Tooth Eruption

Teeth start to form before birth, and the first tooth may erupt as early as 4 months old. Your child will likely have all of their baby teeth in by age 3, then progressively lose them from late childhood through adolescence. The final permanent teeth to erupt are the third molars or "wisdom teeth," which normally come in around age 20.

Your Child's First Pediatric Dental Visit

Your child's first dental visit is an exciting milestone, but it may come much sooner than you expect. In keeping with the American Dental Association, we ask parents to bring their children in for an initial appointment on around their first birthday. This appointment gives us a chance to get acquainted, helps your child get used to dental visits, and lets Dr. Randall examine your child's teeth to ensure things are developing normally.

Diet & Your Child's Dental Health

In-office pediatric dental care is important, but it's only one part of your child's dental health. Equally important is the care you provide at home. Creating strong habits for oral hygiene through brushing and flossing is vital, and you'll also want to help your child maintain a healthy, tooth-friendly diet. Believe it or not, what we eat has a big impact on our dental health: sugary, high-carbohydrate foods contribute to tooth decay and cavities, which can lead to even more serious dental problems. Work with your child to help them avoid sugary and carb-heavy foods, and instead filling their diet with fruits, vegetables, and low-fat cheeses and yogurt to contribute to strong teeth and a healthy body.
