In addition to dental treatments, we also offer periodontal therapy to help ensure healthy gums, healthy teeth, and a lifetime of beautiful smiles.

About Periodontal Disease

While healthy, strong teeth are crucial to a great smile, the health of your gums is equally important – and periodontal disease is one of the most common causes of oral health problems in adults. Periodontal (gum) disease is a progressive condition that often starts mild, but without proper treatment, it can progress into a more serious condition. In advanced cases, gum disease can cause bone loss and eventually even cause teeth to fall out.

The first stage of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, is a relatively mild condition – but treatment is still important. Gingivitis is generally characterized by red, swollen, or inflamed gums, bleeding during flossing, and even halitosis (bad breath). If left untreated, gingivitis can progress into periodontitis – a much more serious condition that can involves bone loss.

Gum Disease Treatment Through Periodontal Therapy

As with many elements of oral health, the best treatment for periodontal disease is prevention. A strong, diligent oral hygiene regimen is the best way to prevent gum disease and protect your smile, and proper oral hygiene can even reverse early-stage gingivitis.

If periodontal disease progresses, however, we may need to perform treatment. We offer a number of non-surgical options for treating periodontal disease, but treatment generally consists of two main procedures:

  • Scaling and Root Planing: Scaling is similar to regular teeth cleaning, but with a more thorough and intensive procedure. Dr. Randall and his team will use a number of specialized dental tools to carefully scrape away bacteria, plaque, and calculus (tartar), cleaning the teeth entirely and getting rid of the harmful buildup that causes gum disease.
  • Periodontal Maintenance: Maintenance is a specialized program designed to prevent periodontal disease from returning in patients who have previously been treated for it. This ongoing treatment is specifically tailored to each individual’s needs and involves continued removal of plaque and calculus.

Depending on the extent of damage from gum disease, we may need to pursue other restorative or cosmetic dental treatments after concluding your periodontal therapy. Dr. Randall will work with you to decide on the ideal treatment options for your unique situation, and we'll take the time to answer any questions you may have along the way.
