Common Questions About Dental Treatment

Q. How frequently should I see my Hixson dentist?

In keeping with the American Dental Association recommendations, we advise scheduling an appointment for a dental checkup and teeth cleaning every six months or more frequently if conditions warrant closer follow up.

Q. What do I do in case of a dental emergency?

Thankfully, dental emergencies are rare, but it's important to know how to handle one if it does happen. If you experience a dental emergency during our office hours, call us immediately at 423-877-3848. If you have a problem outside of office hours, you can call our office to get the doctor's emergency contact phone number. However, in all cases, if you feel that you're in a serious emergency or that your life may be in danger, head straight to an emergency room or call 911.

Q. What kind of toothbrush should I use?

With so many toothbrushes on the market, it can be hard to choose one for yourself. There are a wide variety of toothbrushes available, and various models may have any of the following qualities:

  • Soft, medium, or firm bristles
  • Flat or ridged bristles
  • Squared or angled head
  • Flexible or hard neck
  • Manual or electric toothbrush

The truth is, you can maintain excellent dental health with almost any type of toothbrush. What's most important is to maintain a diligent oral hygiene routine. That said, we recommend that children use only small, soft-bristled toothbrushes, while adults can use a small or medium-sized toothbrush with soft or extra soft bristles.

    Q. Is it better to use an electric toothbrush or a manual toothbrush?

This is a common question, and recent research indicates that electric toothbrushes may provide an added benefit over manual toothbrushes. Electric brushes are more convenient and make it easier to thoroughly brush the teeth, but it's fully possible to keep your teeth healthy and clean with a manual brush if using proper technique.

    Q. Do I actually have to floss?

Yes! Flossing or using other interdental cleaners  is a vital part of oral hygiene, allowing you to remove bacteria and plaque from places that toothbrushes can’t reach. Without flossing, you're leaving 30% or more of your teeth exposed to harmful bacteria, so make sure to floss every day before bed!

    Q. How do dental sealants work?

Dental sealants involve coating grooves of the back with a thin layer of dental resin. This coating effectively "seals off" these grooves, protecting them from harmful bacteria. While both children and adults can benefit from sealants, it's most commonly used in children to prevent cavities on the chewing surfaces of the rear molars, which are difficult to fully clean.

    Q. When should I bring my child for their first appointment?

In keeping with the American Dental Association recommendations, we ask parents to bring kids in for an initial appointment around their first birthday or when they get their first tooth. While we likely won't recommend any treatment this early, it allows your Hixson dentist to ensure your child's teeth, jaws, and soft tissues are developing normally.
